Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Her mother was her grandmother. She grew up as an only child. Scott attended her school, the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation, she attended Temple University. In Temple, Scott held two jobs as she was studying secondary education. Her dream was to become an English teacher at high school. She had a dream of becoming an English teacher at high school was cut short after she dropped out of school. She began her career as a spoken word artist, performing her own work during live poetry readings. She ultimately joined to Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. The two wrote You Got Me together. She was first outed in the midst of a Roots Show. After that, she secured collaborations with artists like Eric Benet Will Smith and Common. In addition, she had the opportunity to gain experience in the performing arts during the tour that Broadway's musical Rent. She was contracted to Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
